Bread baking: what basic equipment do you really need?

If you are starting to bake bread, you do not need a complete professional bakery. A few well-chosen kitchen helpers make getting started much easier. Here is practical basic equipment – from weighing to cleaning after baking.

Basic equipment for bread baking

1. Kitchen scales

Ratios matter in bread baking, so reliable kitchen scales are part of the basics.

2. Large mixing or dough bowl

It should provide enough space for mixing, kneading and allowing the dough to rise.

3. Dough scraper or bench scraper

A dough scraper helps portion, pick up and work sticky dough. Suitable helpers are available in our baking accessories.

4. Proofing basket – useful, but not essential for every bread

If you frequently bake free-form loaves, a proofing basket can support the dough during proofing.

5. Baking tin, Dutch oven or baking tray

What you need depends on the bread. Existing kitchen equipment is often completely sufficient to start.

The kitchen helper many only think about after baking

The bread is in the oven – and now the bowl, dough hook, scraper and work surface are covered in sticky dough residue. This is also part of bread baking but is easily forgotten when choosing basic equipment.

Teiger® was developed for this step: a reusable cleaning cloth with an open mesh structure that specifically helps remove dough residue. The Teiger® cleaning cloth is made in Germany and certified according to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100.

What do beginners really need?

To start, scales, a bowl and a suitable way to bake are enough. Dough scrapers, proofing baskets and other helpers can be added later. Anyone who bakes regularly should think not only about preparation but also about how bowls and baking utensils become clean again afterwards.

More tips are available in our guide to baking and cleaning and the official Teiger® product information.
